Prof. Jamal Assadi

For the Arabs ethics was a manner
How bad the situation was, no matter!
It's like a star that guides the virtuous,
And in the distant horizon, it is mountainous
In ethics, courage is rooted,
Without it, the loads wavered.
‘Amr and ‘Antara* are the beacons of men's honor
And a strutting dignity they are.
Dignity’s grounds are not trampled on,
If souls vanished or were slain.
From Iben Kulthoum** lessons are obtained
And with his deeds acts are adorned.
Among the Arabs the covenant was sacred,
To fulfill it heroes battled.
His vows As-Samaw’al*** had not betrayed,
While around his fortresses horrors strayed.
Relieving the frightened was a requisite rule;
Not satisfying a call was verily not possible!
The virility of the knights was a solid matter,
Even thieves never repealed it, never.
One of the generous people’s traits was tolerance;
It increased their morals; people treated them with reverence.
Ma’n and Ahnaf**** among men are most respectful
Like the sea from which the pearls do roll.
And for them receiving the guests was an unceasing pattern,
How much money they spent to maintain this tradition!
Goodness is pride, so is munificence;
And proverbs were told about Hatem’s***** bounteousness!
And for helping the oppressed a banner was held
Behind which armies strolled.
These are our ancestors’ traits of the free,
Through the ages, generations them did carry.
In our infested age, these are mere stories
Or even myths and fantasies.
What shall we say if the most vicious have risen
And our path was led by the villain?
